From Shogun Street to Modern Shopping: Explore the History of Kagurazaka Street

Kagurazaka Street in Shinjuku Ward is also known as “Shogun Street.” In 1636, it was constructed as a 12-meter-wide street for the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, to pass through. Such streets were called “Onari-dori,” meaning paths that the shogun would use. Today, Kagurazaka is a bustling shopping district. As far as I know, there is no other example in Japan where an Onari-dori has turned into a shopping street. Foreign tourists visiting Kagurazaka are delighted when we tell them, "Kagurazaka Street was made for and walked by a Shogun."

Walking down the same Kagurazaka Street that the Shogun once walked, then watching "SHOGUN" on TV after returning home – that’s a unique and sophisticated experience. The major Emmy Awards will be announced on September 15 (local time) in Los Angeles. Keep an eye out to see if "SHOGUN" can win major awards like Best Drama and Best Director!
