The Rich Culture of Kagurazaka Geisha

Kagurazaka is one of Tokyo’s “Six Kagai” geisha districts, alongside Shinbashi, Akasaka, Yoshicho, Asakusa, and Mukojima. Once home to over 150 ryotei (traditional restaurants) and about 600 geisha, the area was a thriving center of iki (refined sophistication). Although the golden age has passed, the spirit of elegance lives on in the cobblestone alleys, traditional shopfronts, and in the hearts of Kagurazaka’s residents.

Today, Kagurazaka’s geisha community is unique for its youthful energy. Nearly half of the geisha are in their 30s or younger, a rarity in Japan’s geisha world, where the average age nationwide is in the 50s. In 2024, one new geisha debuted, and in 2025, two more have joined, signaling a renewed vitality in the hanamachi.

A Rare Chance to Meet Both the Newly Debuted Geisha and Hangyoku at Tokyo’s Kagurazaka Premium Beer Hall

On June 2nd, two major milestones took place. The first: Waka, formerly a hangyoku (apprentice), was promoted to geisha. In Tokyo, this is known as an ippon-hirome (debut as a full-fledged geisha), while in Kyoto it’s called eri-kae (collar change). With this promotion, Waka’s kimono will change from a long-sleeved furisode to a formal visiting kimono (houmongi), and her makeup will shift from white-faced to a more natural style.

The second debut: Kyoka, who had been training as a minarai (trainee), was officially introduced as a hangyoku (apprentice geisha) on June 2nd. At her debut, she will wear white-faced makeup, a vibrant furisode kimono, and seasonal hair ornaments to mark the start of her journey as a geisha.

At Tokyo’s Kagurazaka Premium Beer Hall, you’ll have the rare chance to meet both the newly debuted geisha Waka and the freshly introduced hangyoku Kyoka – a truly special moment!
