Samurai vs. Spider-Man? A 1,000-Year-Old Battle in Japan at Noh Theater

Samurai vs. Spider-Man? A 1,000-Year-Old Battle in Japan at Noh Theater

Did Spider-Man Fight a Samurai 1,000 Years Ago in Japan at Noh Theater?

Can you believe that Spider-Man once fought a Samurai 1,000 years ago in Japan—at a Noh Theater, no less? You can witness the dramatic Noh play Tsuchigumo (“The Earth Spider”), a performance that evokes what might be called Japan’s 1,000-year-old Spider-Man legend. In the heart of Tokyo’s Kagurazaka neighborhood stands the Yarai Noh Theater.

I had the chance to see this incredible performance on May 25, 2025. In one of its most striking moments, the spider demon uses long strips of washi paper to mimic spider silk, casting them out into the audience—a breathtaking display that thrilled both children and adults alike. The quiet energy of the theater that day was unforgettable.

A Tale Rooted in History

Tsuchigumo draws on the legend of Minamoto no Yorimitsu (948–1021), a famed samurai hero who defeated the monstrous earth spider. Historically, the word tsuchigumo also referred to indigenous tribes that resisted the central imperial court. Over time, this folklore turned these ancient enemies into supernatural creatures.

In the play, the sickly Yorimitsu is attacked by the spirit of the earth spider. After striking it with his legendary sword, the creature vanishes. Yorimitsu’s four loyal retainers track the blood trail and ultimately defeat the spider at an ancient burial mound. It’s a classic tale of samurai courage and mystical forces that has captivated audiences for centuries.

Edo-Era Monster Boom and Ukiyo-e Prints

During the Edo period, the arrival of printing technology sparked a boom in yokai (monster) stories. Tsuchigumo became a popular subject for kabuki theater, joruri (puppet theater), and of course, vibrant ukiyo-e woodblock prints. We’ve included a few of these stunning prints in this blog—just imagine how they must have delighted and astonished Edo’s townspeople!
